Keep Your House Dry, DAM-it!

December 2, 2015

This post comes to us from a Control4 partner, DAM-it Water Control.

We've all heard the horror stories of someone who was away from their home for vacation and was greeted by a house full of water upon their return.

Every year nearly one million families have their homes ruined and their lives overturned by water damage and the subsequent repairs. These incidents are always unexpected, and the cost of repairs can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Even after the damage is repaired, you can still suffer from side effects—such as mold—that are invasive and hard to track down.

Here at DAM-it Automated Water Control, we came up with a solution that will not only provide you the tools to stop a water leak as it occurs, but also the peace of mind that you are constantly in control of the situation even when you’re away from home.

Our water damage solution revolves around two devices: our Automated Water Control Valve and the Flood Sensor. Both devices work through a Control4 Smart Home system and are specifically designed to continuously check for leaks and be ready to shut off the water supply at a moment’s notice.

First, the Flood Sensor.

Aging and faulty appliances, corroded water heaters, and fixtures in bathrooms and laundry rooms can all cause water damage. The problem with these risk areas is that they are often tucked away and rarely checked. This is where the Flood Sensor helps. Place one of these sensors near a problem area and if any leak occurs, you will receive an immediate notification by either text message or email. But what good are the notifications if you can’t do anything about the leak?

Enter, the Automated Water Control Valve.

Imagine you’re away on vacation, and now you have a notification letting you know you have a leak somewhere in your home. It’s great that you are aware of the situation, but there’s not much you can do about it. You can call a friend or neighbor, but how will they get into the house? And if you call the city, it’s likely you’ll incur quite a cost to have them sent out.

With the Automated Water Control Valve, you will be able to turn your water supply on or off remotely, or by any flood sensor. The automated valve, being plumbed on the water main, will shut off any water leak in the house.  This means that when you receive a leak notification from one of our Flood Sensors, you’ll have the peace of mind that the water valve has already been turned off, eliminating any further leak from occurring.

What’s more, you can even create rules for when the water is on or off.  For instance, the water can be programmed to turn off when you leave home, turn on only when the sprinklers need to run, then turn back off until you arrive back home for the evening.  For colder climates, you can also program our sensors to alert you when they detect low or freezing temperatures.  The same is possible with heat conditions. Once the system is in place, the possibilities for automation are many.

Water damage is something all homeowners fear and can be devastating if not handled immediately. With the DAM-it Automated Water Control system in your Control4 Smart Home, you will have the peace of mind that no matter how far away from home you are, you are in control and your house is protected.
